Proudly Serving the Hulet and Devils Tower Community
Crook County Farm Bureau Federation annually sponsors the Ag Books for Kids contest for K-5th grade students. A book related to agriculture is paired with resources to learn about a specific ag topic.
The book selected this year, Popcorn Country, tells the story of America's favorite snack and how popcorn is planted, grown, and harvested. Twila Pilcher, Hulett School librarian, read the book to each class.
Students could then complete an entry for the contest. There are three contest categories and the top three County Contest entries in each then go to the District Contest comprised of entries from the five counties in northeast Wyoming.
Crook County had 236 entries this year. Hulett students submitted 69 entries, won five of the nine County Contest awards, and three of those were District Contest winners. Awards were presented to Hulett students on May 17 by Zeta Nuckolls Anderson, Crook County Farm Bureau Federation secretary.
The Coloring Contest is for students in kindergarten and first grade with a pre-printed page to color. Kaycie Neiman won first place in the County Contest and placed second in the District Contest.
Students in second and third grades have a Poster Contest where they drew and color a picture of the favorite thing they learned about agriculture from the book. Madison Mattley's poster was selected as third place in the County Contest. The first place poster in the County Contest was designed by Wyatt Amdahl. In addition, his poster was chosen as first place in the District Contest.
The contest for fourth and fifth grade students is the Marketing Ad. Students are given a scenario and asked to create an advertisement marketing something learned from the book, including a 15-word slogan. Cabe Volkman's ad was selected as third place in the County Contest. Samantha Amdahl won second place in the County Contest and second place in the District Contest.
Congratulations to all the students for their great work. All Crook County winners receive prizes from the Crook County Farm Bureau Federation and everyone who participated received microwave popcorn.
District winners receive a copy of the book Popcorn Country. Twila Pilcher was recognized for her willingness to read the book to students, promote the contest and gathering the entries.
The Farm Bureau Federation is an organization of local farmers and ranchers who have a passion to promote and educate about agriculture. We believe the next generation should be informed about where their food comes from because the future of agriculture is important to us all.
