Hulett School Library will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Mon., Nov. 7 to Thurs., Nov. 10. Funds raised will help purchase books for the school library and classroom libraries. Families, faculty and the community, are invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become lifelong readers. Students from the 4th and 7th grades of the Hulett School, taught by Anna Backen and Josh Willems respectively, enjoyed visiting the Vore Buffalo Jump on October 5. These students study Wyoming History, and the Vore Buffalo Jump allows students to step into the past and really imagine what life would have been like during the period in our history when Native Americans trapped large numbers of bison in the Vore site sinkhole. According to this year’s accountability scores, all of Crook County’s schools are at least partially meeting the state’s expectations and have not seen a significant drop in performance scores, despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19. Accountability measures have not been determined since the 2018-19 school year, a two-year pause caused by the pandemic. Hulett fourth graders have earnestly been studying indigenous tribes of Wyoming as part of Wyoming History. An element of the indigenous tribe unit is how these people utilized the buffalo in many aspects of their daily life. The class finished a read aloud of Naya Nuki, the story of a Shoshone girl who was captured with Sacajawea but escaped and tried to survive independently on the way back to her people. Students build connections during Heart of Gold Livestock Show The second annual "Heart of Gold Livestock Show" was held Sept. 27 at the Crook County Fairgrounds in Sundance. The Devils Tower FFA is making plans to get elementary students involved in the chapter by growing herbs. Each class Kindergarten through fifth grade, has been assigned a herb to grow in their classroom. Herbs are easily grown, low maintenance plants that are perfect for growing in classrooms year-round. The Crook County School District held their annual Bus Driver's Clinic in Hulett Aug. 16, with all route bus drivers and substitute drivers attending. All bus drivers are required by the State of Wyoming to complete six hours of training yearly. This year, the clinic focused on defensive driving. Campbell County provided the training. The majority of Wyoming residents feel our schools don’t prepare children for the future, according to Governor Mark Gordon’s education advisory group. A public survey that garnered over 7000 responses – including 326 from Crook County – saw 59% of people answer “no” to the question. School district employees were the most likely to believe the way Wyoming educates its kids prepares them for the future at 48%, followed by parents and guardians at 44%, while concerned citizens were the least likely at just 29%.
