  • Temporary closure to protect nesting falcons and climbers at Devils Tower

    May 25, 2023

Rock climbing routes on the east and northeast faces of Devils Tower summit will be temporarily closed effective immediately to protect nesting Peregrine and Prairie Falcons. The closure is implemented annually to provide the falcons with an undisturbed nesting location during this critical courtship and nest-selection period. The presence of climbers near falcon nests can be distressing to parent birds and disturbance from climbing activities may force falcons to abandon eggs or chicks. The closure is also implemented to protect climbers, as...

    May 18, 2023

Crook County’s Mike Frey has been named the 2023 Tree Farmer of the Year by Wyoming State Forestry. Frey has been the owner of the Moskee Land Corp property for close to twenty years now. Owning timbered ground comes with its own set of challenges, as he has learned throughout his ownership. These in-between tasks included battling beetle infestations, reducing the fine and medium fuel loads, creating water s...

  • Don't let bugs take a bite out of outdoor fun

    May 18, 2023

Simple personal actions can help residents escape some potentially serious insect-spread diseases linked with warmer weather and outdoor activities, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). Courtney Tillman, epidemiologist with WDH, said avoiding mosquitos and ticks is the basic strategy and remains important. “Wyoming’s reported case numbers from the diseases these insects can cause are typically low, but we consistently see activity each year. And, unfortunately, the results can sometimes be severe,” Tillman said. West Nile virus...

  • Black Hills wildlife fared better than in much of Wyoming this winter

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

The Black Hills region appears to have escaped the more severe levels of wildlife mortality that have affected much of Wyoming this winter. The Wyoming Game & Fish Department has announced that active monitoring of the big game across the state has shown increased mortality due to the increased snowfall and extreme temperatures over the last few months. “Wyoming is used to tough winters, but it has been a while since we have had a winter where severe conditions were so widespread across the state,” said Doug Brimeyer, Wyoming Game and Fish Dep...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 6, 2023

The northern long-eared bat is now officially listed as “endangered”. The implementation of this upgrade to the bat’s status was originally set to take place on January 30. However, this was delayed until the end of March to address concerns over the impact that the listing might have on infrastructure projects across the bat’s territory. The delay, according to an announcement from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) in the Federal Register, “Is necessary for the Service to finalize conservation tools and guidance documents to avoid con...

  • Where to go with it?

    Mar 9, 2023

The public works department has spent many hours plowing snow and hauling it off. It has been several years since Hulett has seen the amount of snow that has been measured this year. With all the snow comes the problem of where to go with it. Many residents have been gracious enough to allow Public Works to put snow on their property, which is a tremendous help to the town. Once the snow is piled, the town will then haul it out to either the recreation grounds or to their property north of...

  • Spring flood outlook lower than average

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 23, 2023

The snow may be coming down more often than it has over recent years, but the National Weather Service (NWS) is not predicting it will cause flooding when the spring arrives. According to the outlook for the Rapid City Hydrologic Service Area, the severe drought conditions that led into winter – along with lower streamflows and minimal frost – have reduced the chance for spring floods, despite the abundance of the snowpack. At this time, there is below average potential for flooding in northeastern Wyoming. The NWS predicts less than a 5% chanc...

    Sarah Pridgoen|Jan 12, 2023

As a new year begins, the county commissioners have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that Crook County’s interests are represented in the updated management plans under development by the U.S. Forest Service for the Black Hills National Forest (BHNF) and, separately, by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for lands in northeast Wyoming. Forest Plan The BHNF management plan has caused considerable concern over recent months after many – including the commissioners – felt that the draft assessments being used to develop the update were...

  • New signage warns of toxic blooms

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 10, 2022

Crook County Natural Resource District has teamed up with Keyhole State Park to purchase and install signage that will educate the public about the dangers of harmful cyanotoxins caused by cyanobacteria algae blooms. The signs were delivered to the park's superintendent, Greg Deveraux, last week – a timely moment to install them, as it turns out, because the bloom advisory changed to a toxin advisory on October 27. According to the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, advisories are i...
