JACKSON - This fall, Game and Fish will issue a third as many tags for hunting female and juvenile bighorn sheep in the Gros Ventre Range after winter weather and mountain lion predation in 2023 culled the herd. Following helicopter surveys in 2023 and 2024, biologists believe there are about 400 sheep dwelling in the mountains east of Jackson Hole, which is the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's objective for the herd. That's a far cry from 2021 and 2022, when the number of far-sighted sheep...
JACKSON — After years of deliberation, Wyoming has a plan for one of the longest-standing – and most controversial – wildlife management practices in the Cowboy State: feeding elk and maintaining elk feedgrounds. Though Idaho and Montana have eliminated elk feeding programs, except in emergency situations, Wyoming has continued to lay out feedlines for wintering wapiti. The state feeds elk to maintain population numbers and entice elk to winter away from private land, where they can cause property damage, eat ranchers’ hay, and spread disease...
JACKSON - Hannah Garland finds it oddly comforting that she knows which moose trampled her Friday morning. "Had it been a rogue moose, I would've been constantly living on edge, like 'Are you the one? Are you the one?'" said Garland, 27, who lives in Teton Village, where moose are constant features on the landscape. But knowing that it was Yellow 72, a collared, suburban moose known for her mangy look, hair loss and springtime tick infestation, allows Garland a bit more certainty in where she...
JACKSON —There are no glaciers in Yellowstone National Park. That’s according to Yellowstone Superintendent Cam Sholly. Speaking with the Jackson Hole Daily on Friday morning about the summer season, he responded to a UNESCO report that said climate change would cause some glaciers in World Heritage Sites to disappear by 2050. Glaciers in Yellowstone were included in that list. That was an error, Sholly said. The superintendent said Yellowstone had told UNESCO as much. “There’s definitely places in the national park system in North America wher...
JACKSON — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, acting with authorization from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has killed one of Grizzly 399’s offspring that was frequenting human-occupied areas in Sublette County. WyoFile first reported the management action Thursday afternoon. Dan Thompson, Game and Fish’s large carnivore supervisor, told the Jackson Hole Daily that the bear was killed Tuesday after more than a month of conflicts. WyoFile earlier reported that the two-year-old male bear and one of its littermates left Jackson Hole and t...
JACKSON — Barely a week after floods wiped out roads in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park, officials plan to reopen the park’s southern loop Wednesday with a license plate-based system to control the amount of visitors to the park’s southern half. National Park Service Director Charles “Chuck” Sams III also announced Sunday that officials will likely allow access to more than 80% of the park’s roads shortly afterward. “In the next two weeks, we will be opening the northern loop,” Sams told a crowd of reporters Sunday afternoo...
